Zatoichi may seem only a harmless blind gambler, however in fact he is one of the most highly skilled swordsmen to ever walk to roads of Japan. Zatoichi`s name is actually Ichi with Zato being a title. (lit. Low-ranking blind person Ichi) Zato is also a play on words. “Za” is another word for master and “to” likewise meaning sword, so his name could also be “First sword master” Commonly “disguised” a vagrant Zatoichi is frequently seen defending the weak and downtrodden from the oppressive Yakuza and Japanese government

Zatoichi uses many different aspects to attain an advantage over his opponents even though blind.
